A group of red blood cells

Current Research

Immunophenotype of Feline Immune Mediated Anemias and Cytopenias

Dr. Robinn Teoh (DVSc student and small animal internal medicine resident) is investigating the types of immune cells present at diagnosis and throughout treatment in cats with immune mediated anemias and cytopenias.

Investigators: Drs. Shauna Blois, Allison Collier, Darren Wood, Alice Defarges

Funded by: OVC Pet Trust

Iron Status of Feline Blood Donors

Mary Brown (MSc student) is performing a longitudinal study of the effects of regular blood donation on a group of feline blood donors. She is attempting to validate a feline-specific ferritin assay for use in this investigation.

Investigators: Drs. Shauna Blois, Allison Collier, Dorothee Bienzle.

Funded by: OVC Pet Trust.

Accuracy of Commercial Gel Crossmatch Kits in Cats

The laboratory team is investigating the use of commercial, point-of-care gel antiglobulin-potentiated crossmatch kits. The results of the point-of-care gel tests are being compared to results generated by a reference laboratory. In addition, the effects storage of red blood cell units on the accuracy of these tests is being evaluated by Dr. Insung Chun, a small animal intern at the OVC-HSC.

Investigators: Drs. Shauna Blois, Allison Collier, Sebastien Sanz, Insung Chun.

Funded by: OVC Pet Trust.

Immunopathology of Canine Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia

The laboratory team is investigating the types of immune cells present at diagnosis and throughout treatment in dogs with immune mediated hemolytic anemia.

Investigators: Drs. Shauna Blois, Anthony Abrams-Ogg, Darren Wood, Benoit Cuq.

Funded by: American Kennel Club and OVC Pet Trust.

Platelet Function Testing in Cats with Acute Kidney Injury

The laboratory team is investigating the effects of acute kidney Injury, especially ureteral obstruction, on the function of feline platelets.

Investigators: Drs. Matthew Kornya, Shauna Blois, Anthony Abrams-Ogg

Funded by: Everycat Health Foundation and OVC Pet Trust.

Platelet Function Testing in Cats on Clopidogrel Therapy

The laboratory team is undertaking long-term follow-up on the outcomes of cats receiving clopidogrel therapy, and investigating correlations between results of platelet function tests and thrombosis.

Investigators: Drs. Matthew Kornya, Anthony Abrams-Ogg, Shauna Blois, Darren Wood,

Funded by: Everycat Health Foundation and OVC Pet Trust.
